Camp site review: Anvil Campground, Williamsburg, VA

We just returned from a weeklong trip where we visited Williamsburg, VA and then Washington, D.C. As I always like to read about places I’m staying before I get there, I wanted to put together some notes on the campgrounds we stayed in during our trip.

When we stayed in Williamsburg, VA, we parked our travel trailer at Anvil Campground for three days. The campground is conveniently located just a few miles from the area’s main attractions, including Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens-Williamsburg and Water Country USA.

When we arrived Saturday evening, we followed the signs to the Registration office and camp store to check in. Ray was super helpful in getting us checked in quickly, and accommodated our requests to park in a shaded area of the park (it’s June so we wanted to try to keep the camper as cool as possible!).

He told us we could go look at the site and if we needed something else, he would gladly help move us to another spot.

Anvil Campground is a pretty small park, which is great because it’s pretty easy to navigate to your parking spot. Ours was at the end of the property, in the shade. Each site is level, and includes a wooden picnic table and a fire ring.

The spots are pretty close together – our trailer backed up almost bumper to bumper to our neighbors to the back. But the way the sites are planned, we never felt like we were right on top of our neighbors. The travelers we met were friendly and seemed happy just to be there.

Our camp site at Anvil Campground was level, with a picnic table and fire ring.

Our kids LOVED Anvil Campground. It had a basketball court, an arcade room, a pool, a playground and a zip line! The property was small enough that I felt comfortable letting them roam around a bit together without feeling they would get lost.

The Check-In office also has a camp store with some essentials, like ice and firewood, as well as some cute gifts and souvenirs.

One important thing to note is the Anvil Campground staff can sell you area attraction tickets at a discount – we actually were able to get our Colonial Williamsburg tickets for less than if we’d bought them at the Visitor Center. You can also purchase Busch Gardens and Water Country tickets.

Chris (the owner) was incredibly helpful in answering our questions about what tours we should take, what events were happening in the area, restaurant recommendations and more.

The restroom facilities at Anvil Campground are top notch. They were always clean and uncrowded. The showers had a locking door on them (which seems rare, at least amongst the campgrounds we’ve traveled, where a shower curtain is the strongest line of defense). There was plenty of counter space and plugs to get ready for the day.

While we didn’t measure all of the parking spots, there were some huge RV rigs parks at Anvil, which tells me they have plenty of space for even the largest of motorhomes.

They also have some cabins for rent on the property, as well as some tent-only sites.

One other thing to note: Anvil Campground does parallel an active train track. The trains do come through several times day and night. While it didn’t bother us – once we were inside and the A/C was kicking, we really didn’t notice it while we were sleeping. But if you’re a light sleeping or noise sensitive, you should ask to park away from the train track if you can. Please note you’ll still be able to hear it no matter where you park – some sites are just closer to the tracks than others.

My kids kind of loved watching the train blow through, though!

Overall, we loved staying at Anvil Campground! The park was clean, easy to navigate and the owners and staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. If you’re planning a camping trip to Williamsburg, VA, you should definitely consider staying at Anvil!

Mr. Piggles, our traveling pig, joined us during our stay at Anvil Campground. He gave it his five oink salute! (That’s 5-stars to you and me).

  1. Nice that you shared. Lovely place! And your review at the end is useful too! Are you planning to do such reviews in every place?

    1. Thank you for reading! Yes, I try to post a review of each place we camp – I know when I’m planning trips, it’s helpful to have first-hand accounts of places people stay. It helps me decide where we should go! I’m working on more reviews as we type. Hope you are well!
