Campground review: Charleston/Mt. Pleasant KOA

It’s Spring Break time, and we took the opportunity to visit a new campground in our home state of South Carolina, the Charleston/Mt. Pleasant KOA. Charleston is just a few hours away from Greenville, making it a great long weekend getaway for us.

We’ve stayed at several KOA campgrounds around the Southeast, and the Charleston/Mt. Pleasant KOA Holiday ranks up there as one of our all time favorites! We were late getting out of town on our departure day, putting our arrival after dark closer to 9 p.m. The front office was kind enough to coordinate our arrival time, and make sure a host was available to guide us to our spot, despite the late hour.

We reserved one of the Deluxe Pull-through sites (site #26), which was a flat campsite, featuring a concrete patio, round table, adirondack chairs with fire pit, and a two-seater swing. Our site overlooked the pond, which offers fishing (catch and release), canoeing and paddle boating to campers. We had a full hookup, which included 30/50 amp electrical connection, water/sewer and cable TV access (which my boys loved since it was full on March Madness tournament basketball time!).

The Charleston/Mt. Pleasant KOA Holiday definitely feels more like resort-camping, which was exactly what we were looking for during our Spring Break. While staying there, you have access to the swimming pool (a bit too chilly for us during our stay, but I’m sure is popular during the warmer months), bike rentals, cornhole, a rec center and more.

A playground and basketball court area was busy with kids while we were there – which I love to see, because it means families are traveling and spending time together. A 1.5 nature trail surrounds the pond.

There was also an ice machine and propane tank refill station on site. The WiFi at the campground was some of the strongest I’ve seen. We were all able to access it from various points on the property. We didn’t try to stream anything, so I’m not sure of the strength, but it worked well for what we needed.

The Charleston/Mt. Pleasant KOA is located on Hwy 17 North, just past the Isle of Palms Connector if you’re coming from Charleston. It was super easy to access points of interest around the area – we rented kayaks on Shem Creek one day, spent the day at the beach and Isle of Palms, and even drove over to Kiawah to visit some family one afternoon. This campground is a great jumping off point for whatever you’re wanting to do in the Charleston area, from exploring the historic downtown, touring the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point, or hitting the beach.

The staff at the Charleston/Mt. Pleasant KOA was incredibly helpful and kind. They provided daily trash pick up, and the grounds were immaculate. There were also crews out working to keep things looking nice. They have a store on-site with snacks, drinks and items you might have forgotten. We actually had a maintenance issue in our camper while we were there, and while the staff couldn’t help us, they referred us to a local technician in the area who was able to guide us.

If you’re looking for a relaxing, well-kept campground in the Charleston area, look no further than the Charleston/Mt. Pleasant KOA. We can’t wait to visit the area again soon!
